Each time I expect a lot and each time I am disappointed.
There are several good alternatives in the market but I never found THE file manager.
I've decided to create it, with the following philosophy:

  • Simple and clean
  • Powerful
  • Beautiful and easy to use user interface

Instead of just saying "hey this is our new product!, it is awesome!, buy it!" I decided to create it with you, from the concept to the first final version.

I will share the progress as often as possible and will release as soon as possible alpha versions even if they are features complete.

Defining the general architecture

The file manager will have tabs from the beginning and will have to support dual pane browsing.
In my mind the final result should be a mix between Chrome for its amazing tab system and Twitter for Mac for its simplicity and speed.

Current progress

I started this project few month ago and after restarting from scratch several times, I have now something having the basic features of a file manager.
Okay, it is not yet able to copy a file (do not worry, it is planned ;) but it starts to look like a real application.
Here is a screenshot of the current version. As you may imagine there is nothing yet definitive.

With the first beta of Lion we were happy to see that nothing was broken.
Unfortunately, things started to go bad with last beta of Lion. The API used by Deskovery to perform window shading had a different behavior.
Because they are not documented by Apple, we started to investigate in order to fix the situation. After several weeks of researches, we got the conclusion that is is probably not possible to continue with the current approach.
We started to think about a new way to "windowshade" your windows with Lion.
We are today proud to release the first alpha version of the new Deskovery. Please not that this is not yet a fully stable version and we appreciate bug reports.
Apart of window shading feature, several Lion compatibility enhancements have been done.

You can now configure the percentage of transparency when you make transparent a window.
It is also possible to choose if you want to have an icon in Menubar. Just be careful if you remve both Dock and Menubar icons, it can be really tricky to access to Preferences again.
